Choose the right container size and type

40ft access units are designed for specific cargo requirements that standard containers cannot accommodate. Container Projects stocks two primary access configurations in this size.

40ft Open Side Containers

The 40ft open side container features full-length bi-folding doors along one side. This design allows for the loading of oversized items or pallets by forklift without the restrictions of end-door dimensions. These units are typically supplied as high cube models to provide extra vertical clearance. Tare is the weight of an empty container. Payload is the maximum weight a container can carry.

  • External Length: 12192mm
  • External Width: 2438mm
  • External Height: 2896mm
  • Tare: 5850kg
  • Payload: 24630kg

40ft Tunnel Containers

The 40ft tunnel container, also known as a double-door unit, features standard cargo doors at both 8ft ends. This enables first-in, first-out stock management and access from two separate points on the site. These are often used as walkways or to bridge two separate storage areas.

  • Internal Length: 12032mm
  • Internal Width: 2352mm
  • Internal Height: 2393mm (Standard) or 2698mm (High Cube)

Hire or buy

Container Projects assists customers in determining whether to purchase or rent based on project duration. Buying is the preferred option for long-term storage or bespoke container conversions. Hiring is more efficient for temporary construction projects where capital expenditure needs to be controlled. We also provide a container buy-back service for customers who no longer require their units at the end of a project.

Condition grades and what they mean

Units are graded to help users choose between aesthetic quality and cost-effectiveness. Container Projects provides clear definitions for each grade.

  • one-trip: A one-trip unit is a container used once for cargo before being sold, representing the highest quality available.
  • wind and watertight: A wind and watertight unit is a used container that resists weather and prevents leaks to protect internal contents.
  • IICL: IICL refers to international repair and inspection standards that ensure a unit is suitable for demanding industrial use.

Delivery access, siting, and placement

The successful delivery of a 40ft unit requires significant space. Our container haulage vehicles use hiab cranes to position the unit. You must ensure the following constraints are met:

  • Width: The vehicle requires a minimum width of 10ft for access.
  • Height: 15ft of vertical clearance is needed to avoid overhead obstructions.
  • Turning: Articulated vehicles require a large turning circle to manoeuvre on site.
  • Ground: The container must be placed on firm level ground, such as concrete, tarmac, or compacted gravel, to prevent the doors from binding.

Security, condensation, and aftercare

Security is a priority for high-value cargo. Container Projects installs factory-fitted lockboxes on each unit to protect padlocks from tampering. To manage moisture, we offer Grafo-therm anti-condensation coating. This treatment absorbs condensation and prevents water from dripping onto goods. Aftercare includes greasing the hinges and checking the door seals every six months to maintain the unit in optimal condition.

Export use and compliance

If you intend to use your container for international shipping, it must have a valid CSC plate. A CSC plate is a safety approval for international transport that confirms the unit is structurally sound. Container Projects ensures all units destined for export are inspected and carry the necessary certification. For more information on our standards, visit our about us page.

Frequently asked questions

How much space does a 40ft open side container need to open?

Can a tunnel container be partitioned?

Yes, Container Projects can install a central partition to create two separate 20ft storage areas, each with its own end access. Visit our faq for more technical details.

What is the lead time for a 40ft access unit?
