Side Curtain Shipping Containers

Container Projects manages the distribution of specialised curtain-side units to industrial and logistics sectors. If you need to buy containers for long-term fleet use or hire containers for short-term projects, we maintain stock in regional UK depots. You can get a quote for delivery to your site through our technical team. Our network ensures rapid deployment and professional support for all equipment.

Side curtain containers feature a rigid roof and floor with heavy-duty PVC curtains on one or both sides. This design allows for fast pallet loading using a forklift without the constraints of end doors. Most units are available as one-trip stock. A one-trip unit is a new container that has made a single journey from the manufacturer to the UK. For international transport, every unit carries a CSC plate. A CSC plate is a safety approval plate required for international shipping to confirm structural integrity.

Choose the right container size and type

Side curtain units provide maximum accessibility for cargo that cannot be loaded through standard rear doors. Container Projects stocks standard ISO lengths to suit different transport requirements.

20ft Side Curtain Containers

The 20ft variant offers a compact footprint suitable for restricted sites. It provides the same floor area as a 20ft general-purpose unit but eliminates the need for internal manoeuvring. This size is ideal for delivering heavy pallets to urban locations.

40ft Side Curtain Containers

The 40ft side curtain container is the industry standard for high-volume palletised goods. It matches the length of a 40ft general-purpose box and is frequently used in intermodal logistics. We also supply 45ft side curtain units for maximum cubic capacity.

Specialised Access Units

For cargo that requires rigid walls yet full access, Container Projects stocks open-side containers. However, side curtain units remain the lightest option, providing a higher payload for road transport. A payload is the maximum weight of cargo the container can carry.

Hire or buy

Container Projects assists businesses in selecting the best acquisition route. Buying is a practical choice for permanent site storage or dedicated transport loops. Hire provides a flexible, cost-effective solution for seasonal demand or temporary contracts. We provide technical data sheets for all units to ensure they meet your site loading requirements.

Condition grades and what they mean

We grade all curtain-side units to ensure transparency and safety. New units offer the best curtain tension and weather protection. For used stock, we provide units that meet the IICL standard. IICL refers to a high standard of container repair and condition set by the Institute of International Container Lessors. While the sides are flexible, the roof and ends are maintained to a wind and watertight standard. A wind and watertight unit is a condition grade ensuring the unit is sealed against weather and light. We also confirm the tare of every unit. The tare is the weight of the empty container.

Delivery access, siting, and placement

Container Projects coordinates container haulage using hiab crane vehicles. Professional placement requires specific site conditions:

  • Ground Surface: The ground must be level and firm. Uneven surfaces can cause the frame to twist, which affects curtain tension and door operation.
  • Side Clearance: Unlike standard boxes, these units require extra side clearance for the forklift to approach and load the container.
  • Overhead Clearance: Check for low bridges or power cables. A delivery vehicle carrying a container can exceed 15ft in height.
  • Turning Circle: A 40ft delivery vehicle requires approximately 100ft of straight approach to manoeuvre into position safely.

Security, condensation, and aftercare

Security for side curtain units is managed through heavy-duty curtain buckles and internal lashing points. While the PVC curtains are reinforced, we recommend lockable straps for extra security. To manage condensation, Container Projects advises on proper ventilation and the use of moisture traps. Our aftercare team provides maintenance tips for curtain tracks and rollers to ensure smooth operation over long service life.

Export use and compliance

For international shipping, side curtain units must comply with ISO standards and maintain a valid CSC plate. Container Projects ensures all units sold for export meet maritime safety requirements. We provide the necessary documentation for shipping lines and port authorities. If the unit is used for road transport only, we confirm it meets UK haulage standards for curtain-side stability.

How Container Projects handles supply and delivery

  1. Consultation: We review your cargo type and required container dimensions.
  2. Selection: We identify a suitable 20ft or 40ft side curtain unit from our closest UK depot.
  3. Logistics: Our team verifies your site access and confirms a delivery date, usually within 5 to 10 working days.
  4. Transport: A hiab vehicle delivers the unit and positions it on your prepared surface.
  5. Handover: The driver demonstrates the curtain operation and checks the unit is level.
