General Purpose Shipping Containers
Container Projects provides robust storage and transport solutions for businesses nationwide. Whether you need to buy containers for permanent site use or rent containers for a short-term project, we maintain a diverse inventory in regional depots. You can request a container quote to receive technical specifications and availability for your location. Our logistics network ensures that every unit reaches your site efficiently.
General-purpose units are the standard for the shipping industry. These containers are often referred to as one-trip units when purchased new. A one-trip unit is a new container that has made a single journey from the manufacturer to the UK. Every unit intended for international transport carries a CSC plate. A CSC plate is a safety approval plate required for international shipping to certify that the container is structurally sound.

Choose the right container size and type
General-purpose containers are fully enclosed with rigid walls, a roof, and a floor. They are suitable for almost all types of dry cargo. Container Projects stocks standard sizes to fit various site footprints and volume requirements.
20ft containers
The 20ft general-purpose container is the most versatile unit for site storage. It provides approximately 33 cubic metres of internal space. It is small enough to fit into most driveways or small industrial plots while providing enough room for palletised goods, tools, or household effects. The internal height is approximately 2.39m (7ft 10in).
40ft containers
The 40ft general-purpose container is designed for large-scale storage and high-volume logistics. It provides double the floor area of a 20ft unit but requires significant space for delivery. These units are ideal for long-term industrial inventory or large plant machinery. The payload is the maximum weight of cargo the container can carry, which for a 40ft unit is approximately 26,000kg to 28,000kg, depending on the specific build.
High cube and specialised options
If you require extra vertical space for tall items or to install insulation, Container Projects stocks high cube units. These are 9ft 6in tall, providing an extra foot of height compared to standard boxes. For cargo that cannot be loaded through end doors, we also provide open-top units.

Hire or buy
Container Projects facilitates different commercial needs through sales and rental agreements. Buying is a practical choice for long-term site storage or for those planning a workshop conversion. Hire is a flexible, cost-effective solution for temporary storage during construction or for businesses managing seasonal stock fluctuations. We provide technical support and aftercare for both purchase and rental clients.
Condition grades and what they mean
We grade all stock to help users choose the right unit for their budget and application. New one-trip units offer the best appearance and longevity. For used stock, we often provide units that meet the IICL standard. IICL refers to a high standard of container repair and condition set by the Institute of International Container Lessors. For static storage, many clients select units that are wind and watertight. A wind and watertight unit is a condition grade ensuring the unit is sealed against weather and light. We also confirm the tare of every unit. The tare is the weight of the empty container.
Delivery access, siting, and placement
Container Projects coordinates delivery using hiab crane vehicles. Precision placement requires several site checks:
- Ground Conditions: The unit must be placed on firm, level ground. Soft soil or uneven surfaces can cause the frame to twist, preventing the doors from opening or closing correctly.
- Access Width: The delivery vehicle requires a minimum width of 10ft. More space is required at the offloading point for the vehicle stabiliser legs.
- Turning Space: A 40ft delivery vehicle requires approximately 100ft of straight approach to manoeuvre into position.
- Vertical Clearance: Check for low-hanging branches or overhead power cables. A truck carrying a container can be over 15ft high.
Security, condensation, and aftercare
Security is essential for site storage. Container Projects supplies units with factory-fitted lock boxes. These steel shrouds protect the padlock from bolt croppers and tampering. To manage condensation, we recommend Grafo-therm anti-condensation coatings or moisture traps, especially if the container will house sensitive metal components or electronics. Our aftercare team can advise on simple maintenance, such as greasing door hinges and checking seal integrity, to extend the life of your unit.
Export use and compliance
If you are using a general-purpose container for international shipping, it must have a valid CSC plate status. Container Projects ensures that all units sold for export meet maritime safety standards. We provide the necessary documentation to ensure your unit is accepted by shipping lines and port authorities. If a unit has been used for static storage for many years, it may require a new inspection before it can return to sea.
