Non-Operational Reefer Shipping Containers

Container Projects manages the supply of non-operational reefer (NOR) units to industries requiring passive climate control. These containers are former refrigerated containers where the machinery is no longer used or has been removed. Businesses can choose container sales for permanent on-site storage or container hire for temporary projects. For specific logistics and stock availability, you should get a quote to confirm current regional lead times. Most units in this category are used, but we occasionally supply one-trip containers. A one-trip unit is a new container that has performed a single journey from the manufacturer to the UK.

Choose the right insulated container size

Insulated containers feature stainless steel internal linings and polyurethane foam insulation. This construction prevents the condensation often found in standard steel units.

20ft Insulated Containers

The 20ft thermal unit is suitable for smaller sites with limited space. These units provide a stable temperature for storing paints, chemicals, documents, or food products that do not require freezing. The internal width is narrower than standard units due to the thick insulation panels.

40ft High Cube Insulated Containers

The 40ft thermal high cube unit offers maximum volume and vertical clearance. These are frequently used for large-scale pharmaceutical storage or as the base for modular building conversions. These units generally have an external height of 9ft 6in. You can compare these with standard dimensions on our container dimensions page.

Hire versus buy for thermal storage

Container Projects assists clients in determining the most viable commercial route. Buying is preferred for permanent workshop conversions or long-term storage of sensitive inventory. Hire is more efficient for seasonal demand or construction projects where climate-controlled storage is only needed for several months. We handle the collection and return logistics for all hire units across the UK.

Condition grades and thermal integrity

The condition of the insulation and door seals is vital for temperature maintenance. We provide units that meet the IICL standard. IICL refers to a high standard of container repair and condition set by the Institute of International Container Lessors. For standard storage applications, we offer units graded as wind and watertight. A wind and watertight unit is a condition grade ensuring the unit is sealed against weather and light. This grading confirms the container is free from holes and the floor is structurally sound.

Delivery access and site placement

Container Projects uses hiab crane vehicles to deliver and position containers. Site managers must ensure specific constraints are met:

  • Ground Conditions: The surface must be level and firm, such as concrete or hard-standing, to prevent the container from sinking.
  • Vehicle Clearance: Delivery trucks require a minimum height of 15ft and a width of 10ft.
  • Manoeuvring Space: A 40ft vehicle requires approximately 100ft of straight approach to safely offload the unit.
  • Weight Limits: Be aware of the tare and payload. The tare is the weight of the empty container. The payload is the maximum weight of cargo the container can carry.

Security and aftercare

Security for insulated units is managed through heavy-duty locking bars and factory-fitted lock boxes. Because the internal walls are stainless steel, they are easy to clean and maintain. Container Projects provides aftercare advice, including the regular lubrication of door hinges and the inspection of the rubber door gaskets to ensure the thermal seal remains effective.

Export use and compliance

If the container is used for international transport, it must possess a valid CSC plate. A CSC plate is a safety approval plate required for international shipping. Container Projects ensures all containers sold for export are inspected and certified. Non-operational reefers are a cost-effective way to ship goods that do not need active cooling but require protection from extreme heat during transit through tropical regions.

How Container Projects handles your enquiry

  1. Specification: We confirm the required size and thermal properties for your cargo.
  2. Stock Check: We identify a suitable unit from our closest UK depot to reduce haulage costs.
  3. Site Survey: Our team reviews your delivery location for access constraints.
  4. Transport: We schedule a hiab delivery, typically within 5 to 7 working days.
  5. Placement: The driver positions the unit and ensures it is level for optimal door operation.

Frequently asked questions

Does a non-operational reefer require a power supply?

No. These units are used for passive insulation only. If you require active cooling, please view our refrigerated container options.

Is the internal space smaller than a standard container?

Yes, the internal width and height are slightly reduced because of the 100 mm-thick polyurethane insulation. Detailed measurements are available on our dimensions page.

Can I modify an insulated container into an office?

Yes, the built-in insulation makes these units an excellent starting point for office conversions. Learn more about us and our specialised supply capabilities.

How do I book a delivery?

You can initiate the process by visiting our contact us page to speak with a logistics coordinator.
