Hard-Top Shipping Containers

Container Projects manages the supply of specialised hard-top units for industrial and maritime sectors. For businesses requiring rigid overhead protection with flexible loading options, we provide container sales and container hire with national delivery coverage. You can request a container quote to confirm lead times for specific UK depots. These units are essential for cargo that cannot be loaded through standard doors but requires more protection than a tarpaulin cover.

We supply hard-top units in various conditions, including one-trip stock. A one-trip unit is a new container that has made a single journey from the manufacturer to the UK. Every unit intended for international transport is fitted with a CSC plate. A CSC plate is a safety approval plate required for international shipping to certify structural safety. Container Projects ensures all certification is current at the point of handover.

Choose the right container size and type

Hard-top containers feature a removable steel roof secured by nuts and bolts or locking pins. This design allows for the transport of heavy machinery that must be lowered into the unit by crane.

20ft Hard-top Containers

The 20ft model is suitable for dense, heavy machinery. While it matches the footprint of a 20ft general-purpose unit, the reinforced floor supports high point-loading. For technical specifications, including door height and internal width, refer to our 20ft specialised dimensions page.

40ft Hard-top Containers

The 40ft variant is used for long industrial components or structural steel. It provides the same length as a 40ft general purpose box, but with the added utility of a removable roof. These units often come in high-cube configurations to accommodate taller cargo. You can view high cube specifications for additional vertical clearance.

Comparison with Open-top Units

Unlike a standard open-top unit, which uses a flexible TIR-approved tarpaulin, the hard-top uses a solid steel lid. This provides enhanced security against theft and better protection against environmental debris. If the roof is removed for over-height cargo, it can be stowed inside the container or lashed to the side walls.

Hire or buy

Container Projects facilitates different acquisition paths based on project duration. Buying a hard-top is recommended for permanent site storage or dedicated export loops where long-term ownership is required. Hire provides a flexible alternative for one-off shipments or short-term industrial contracts without large capital expenditure. We maintain regional stock to support both options.

Condition grades and what they mean

The condition of the roof seal and locking mechanism is vital for hard-top units. We supply equipment that meets the IICL standard. IICL refers to a high standard of container repair and condition set by the Institute of International Container Lessors. For domestic storage, we offer used units that are wind and watertight. A wind and watertight unit is a condition grade that ensures the unit is sealed against weather and light. Every unit is checked for its tare and payload limits. The tare is the weight of the empty container. The payload is the maximum weight of cargo the container can carry.

Delivery access, siting, and placement

Container Projects coordinates container haulage using hiab crane vehicles. Successful delivery requires specific site conditions:

  • Surface: The ground must be level and reinforced, as hard-top units often carry heavy loads that can cause sinking in soft ground.
  • Overhead Clearance: Ensure there are no low cables or branches. A hiab truck requires significant vertical space to lift the container and the roof section.
  • Access Width: Delivery vehicles require a minimum width of 10ft for transit and additional space for deploying stabiliser legs.
  • Turning Space: A 40ft delivery vehicle requires approximately 100ft of straight approach to manoeuvre into position.

Security, condensation, and aftercare

Hard-top containers offer the highest security for top-loading units because the steel roof is as difficult to penetrate as the side walls. We provide lock boxes for the rear doors to prevent padlock tampering. To manage condensation, especially when storing cold metal machinery, Container Projects recommends moisture traps or internal coatings. Our aftercare team can advise on maintaining the roof seals to ensure the unit remains weatherproof over time.

Export use and compliance

For international transit, hard-top units must comply with ISO standards and maintain a valid CSC plate status. Container Projects provides the necessary documentation for maritime shipping lines. If the unit is used to transport cargo that exceeds the roof height, special arrangements for "out of gauge" transport must be made with the carrier.

How Container Projects handles supply and delivery

  1. Specification: We confirm the required container dimensions and weight capacity for your cargo.
  2. Stock Check: We identify the nearest available unit from our UK depot network to reduce transport costs.
  3. Site Review: Our team verifies your delivery access and ground conditions.
  4. Dispatch: We schedule the hiab delivery, usually within 5 to 10 working days.
  5. Installation: The driver levels the unit on-site and demonstrates how to operate the removable roof locks.

Frequently asked questions

How do you remove the roof of a hard-top container?

The steel roof is secured by a series of bolts or locking pins around the perimeter. These are released manually, and then a crane or forklift is used to lift the roof section away using the built-in lifting points.

Is a hard-top container heavier than a standard container?

Yes, because of the reinforced floor and the weight of the steel roof, the tare weight is higher than a standard box. You can find more details on our faq page.

Can I use a hard-top for static storage?

Yes, they are excellent for static storage of heavy equipment that needs to be loaded from above. Contact us to discuss bespoke modifications for permanent storage use.

Where can I find specific door and roof dimensions?

Detailed measurements for all specialised units are listed on our container types and dimensions pages. Visit the contact us page for a specific technical drawing.
