Container Types
Open Top Shipping Containers
Container Projects manages the supply of specialised open-top units for industrial, construction, and maritime sectors. We facilitate container sales and container hire for projects requiring overhead loading. To receive a bespoke technical proposal, you can get a quote through our digital portal. Our logistics network ensures prompt equipment deployment to any UK site.
Open top containers feature a removable TIR-approved tarpaulin instead of a solid steel roof. This design allows for the loading of oversized items that cannot fit through standard doors. We supply these units as one-trip stock. A one-trip unit is a new container that has made a single journey from the manufacturer to the UK. Every unit intended for international logistics includes a CSC plate. A CSC plate is a safety approval plate required for international shipping to certify structural safety.

Choose the right container size and type
Selecting the correct unit depends on the cargo height and weight. These containers feature a swinging or removable header bar above the rear doors to facilitate crane loading.
20ft Open Top Containers
The 20ft model is suitable for heavy, concentrated loads like scrap metal or industrial engines. While it matches the footprint of a 20ft general purpose unit, it provides the flexibility of top-down access. Detailed technical data is available on our 20ft specialised page.
40ft Open Top Containers
For longer cargo such as pipes or structural steel, the 40ft open top is the industry standard. It provides the same floor area as a 40ft general purpose container but handles over-height items with ease. Many of our 40ft units are available in high-cube configurations for extra internal volume. You can view high cube specifications for additional clearance data.
Hard Top Alternatives
If your cargo requires overhead loading but requires a rigid roof for security or weather protection, Container Projects stocks hard-top units. These feature a removable steel lid instead of a tarpaulin. You can compare all options on our container types page.
Hire or buy
Container Projects offers flexible acquisition models. Buying is suitable for long-term industrial projects or permanent on-site storage of heavy machinery. Hire is a cost-effective solution for short-term shipping contracts or project-based logistics. We provide technical support for both options across the United Kingdom.

Condition grades and what they mean
We supply units in various grades to meet specific budgetary and operational needs. For international shipping, we provide units that meet the IICL standard. IICL refers to a high standard of container repair and condition set by the Institute of International Container Lessors. For domestic storage, we offer used units that are wind- and watertight. A wind- and watertight unit is a condition grade that ensures the unit is sealed against weather and light. We confirm the tare and payload of every unit before delivery. The tare is the weight of the empty container. The payload is the maximum weight of cargo the container can carry.
Delivery access, siting, and placement
Container Projects utilises hiab crane vehicles for precision placement. Site managers must ensure the following conditions are met:
- Firm Level Ground: The surface must support the weight of the unit and its heavy cargo without sinking.
- Vertical Clearance: Hiab trucks require significant height for crane operation, typically 15ft for transit and more for lifting.
- Access Width: Roads and gates must be at least 10ft wide for the delivery vehicle to pass.
- Turning Circle: A 40ft vehicle requires approximately 100ft of straight approach to manoeuvre safely.
Security, condensation, and aftercare
Security for open-top units is managed via the tarpaulin lashing system and door lock boxes. We recommend regular inspection of the roof bows and tarpaulin to ensure weather-tightness. To manage condensation inside the unit, Container Projects offers moisture traps and specialised coatings. Our aftercare team provides maintenance advice for the removable header bars and seal integrity.
Export use and compliance
All open-top units supplied by Container Projects for export comply with ISO standards and carry a valid CSC plate. We ensure the tarpaulin and lashing cables meet TIR requirements for international customs transit. We provide all necessary documentation for maritime shipping lines at the point of sale or hire.
