Half-Height Shipping Containers
Container Projects manages the supply of specialised units for a range of heavy-duty applications. For businesses looking to buy containers or rent containers, we maintain stock in key UK depots to ensure rapid deployment. You can request a container quote for your specific project requirements through our online system. Our logistics network handles transport and placement for both new and used equipment.
Half-height containers are designed for dense, heavy cargo that does not require full vertical space but needs high weight capacity. We supply these units to the energy, mining, and bulk transport industries. Most units in our fleet are available as one-trip units. A one-trip unit is a new container that has made a single journey from the manufacturer to the UK. For international transport, each unit includes a valid CSC plate. A CSC plate is a safety approval plate required for international shipping to confirm structural integrity.
Choose the right container size and type
Selecting a unit depends on the payload requirements and the nature of the cargo. A payload is the maximum weight of cargo the container can carry. Half-height units are often preferred for cargo like drill pipes, chains, and construction aggregates.

20ft containers
The 20ft general-purpose footprint is common for half-height units. These containers typically have an external height of approximately 4ft or 4ft 2in. They offer efficient loading for heavy materials while remaining compatible with standard shipping infrastructure. The tare weight is approximately 2,300-2,900kg, depending on the specific build. A tare is the weight of the empty container.
40ft containers
For longer, heavy components, the 40ft general-purpose half-height length provides a stable transport base. These are frequently used for industrial machinery components and structural steel. These units often feature removable hard-tops or tarpaulins for top-loading access.
Refrigerated, open top, and flat rack units
In addition to half-heights, Container Projects supplies open-top units for over-height cargo. We also provide flat racks for oversized machinery that exceeds standard width or height limits. Each type serves a specific logistical niche in heavy industry.
Hire or buy
Container Projects offers flexible commercial terms. Hire is ideal for short-term projects or when equipment is only needed for a specific contract duration. Buying is often more cost-effective for permanent site storage or for companies managing their own long-term logistics fleet. We facilitate both options across the United Kingdom with consistent lead times.
Condition grades and what they mean
We grade our stock to ensure users receive equipment fit for purpose. New one-trip units offer the best longevity and aesthetics. Used units are graded as wind and watertight or IICL. A wind- and watertight unit is a condition grade that ensures the unit is sealed against weather and light. IICL refers to a high standard of container repair and condition set by the Institute of International Container Lessors. This grading is essential for units returning to the international shipping service.
Delivery access, siting, and placement
Container Projects uses hiab crane vehicles for most deliveries. Site managers must ensure the following conditions are met:
- Firm Level Ground: Units must sit on level ground, ideally concrete, tarmac, or hard-standing, to prevent door misalignment.
- Turning Space: Delivery vehicles require significant room to manoeuvre. A standard 40ft vehicle needs approximately 100ft of straight approach.
- Clearance: Check for overhead cables and tree branches. A hiab truck needs a minimum height clearance of 15ft for travel and more for crane operation.
- Width: Access gates and roads must be at least 10ft wide to accommodate the vehicle.
Security, condensation, and aftercare
Security is managed through heavy-duty lock boxes, which protect padlocks from cutting tools. For condensation control, we recommend moisture traps or Grafo-therm coatings if the container will house sensitive metal tools or components. Container Projects provides aftercare support, including maintenance advice on door seals and locking bars, to ensure the unit remains secure over its service life.
Export use and compliance
Units used for export must maintain a valid CSC plate status. For specialised energy sector work, we supply offshore containers built to DNV 2.7-1 standards. These units undergo rigorous testing for sea-state impacts and lifting stresses. Container Projects ensures all certification is current at the point of sale or hire.
How Container Projects handles supply and delivery
- Enquiry: Provide your site location and required container type.
- Validation: We check stock levels and confirm the payload and tare specs meet your requirements.
- Site Assessment: We review access constraints and confirm the delivery date, typically within 5 to 7 working days.
- Transport: Our haulage partners collect the unit from the nearest UK depot.
- Placement: The driver offloads the unit and ensures it is level and the doors operate correctly.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a half-height container weigh?
Weight varies by size. A 20ft half-height unit typically has a tare of 2,400kg, while the payload can exceed 25,000kg. Check our container dimensions page for specific technical data.
Can I use a half-height container for international shipping?
Yes, provided it has a valid CSC plate and meets ISO standards for structural integrity. Contact our team to confirm the certification status of the current stock.
How do I contact Container Projects for a site survey?
