Workshop Shipping Containers

Container Projects manages the modification and supply of containers for site-based work. If you need to buy containers for a permanent workshop or rent containers for a temporary project, we maintain stock in regional depots. You can request a container quote through our technical office. Our logistics network ensures rapid deployment and professional support for all equipment throughout the United Kingdom.

Most modified units are available as one-trip units. A one-trip unit is a new container that has made a single journey from the manufacturer to the UK. For international transport, every unit carries a valid CSC plate. A CSC plate is a safety approval plate required for international shipping to certify structural safety. Container Projects ensures all certification is current at the point of handover.

Choose the right workshop size and type

Selecting the correct size depends on your equipment volume and site footprint. Workshop units provide a secure environment for tools, machinery, and maintenance tasks.

20ft workshop containers

The 20ft general purpose footprint is the standard choice for most sites. It provides approximately 33 cubic metres of internal space. This size is suitable for a single-operator workshop with workbenches and tool storage. The internal height is approximately 2.39m (7ft 10in).

40ft workshop containers

For large-scale industrial tasks, 40ft general purpose units offer double the floor area. These are frequently used as central maintenance hubs on large construction sites. Many clients prefer high cube variants to provide an extra foot of vertical height, which is essential for installing overhead lighting and HVAC systems.

Specialised and modified units

If you require combined storage and admin space, we supply 50-50 office stores. For projects in sensitive environments, we provide cladded and painted containers to help the steel structure blend into its surroundings.

Hire or buy workshop containers

Container Projects assists businesses in determining the most efficient commercial path. Buying a workshop container is recommended for permanent site facilities that require custom electrical fit-outs and internal linings. Hire is a flexible solution for short-term projects or seasonal contracts where equipment is only needed temporarily. We handle the collection and return logistics for all rental equipment across the UK.

Condition grades and conversion quality

We grade our stock to ensure your workshop is fit for purpose. For high-end conversions, we use units that meet the IICL standard. IICL refers to a high standard of container repair and condition set by the Institute of International Container Lessors. For basic workshop storage, we offer used units graded as wind and watertight. A wind- and watertight unit is a condition grade that ensures the unit is sealed against weather and light. We confirm the tare and payload of every unit before modification. The tare is the weight of the empty container. The payload is the maximum weight of cargo the container can carry.

Delivery access, siting, and placement

Container Projects coordinates delivery using hiab crane vehicles for precision placement. Site managers must confirm the following conditions before dispatch:

  • Ground Surface: The surface must be firm and level. Soft ground or uneven surfaces can cause the frame to twist, which may prevent the personnel doors or workbenches from aligning correctly.
  • Vehicle Clearance: Delivery trucks require a minimum width of 10ft. More space is needed to deploy crane outriggers during offloading.
  • Turning Space: A 40ft delivery vehicle requires approximately 100ft of straight approach to position the unit safely.
  • Vertical Clearance: Check for overhead power cables or low branches. A truck carrying a high cube unit can exceed 15ft in height.

Security, condensation, and electrical aftercare

Security is a priority for workshop units containing valuable tools. Container Projects installs factory-fitted lock boxes to protect padlocks from tampering. To manage condensation, which can damage metal tools and electrical circuits, we recommend Grafo-therm anti-condensation coatings or moisture-resistant internal lining. Our aftercare support includes advice on maintaining the internal electrical distribution board and regularly checking the door seals to ensure the workspace remains weatherproof.

Export use and compliance

If you intend to ship a modified workshop internationally, the unit must maintain a valid CSC plate status. Cutting windows or personnel doors into a container can change its structural rating. Container Projects facilitates structural re-certification to ensure your modified unit is accepted by maritime shipping lines and port authorities. We provide all necessary documentation at the point of sale.

How Container Projects handles workshop conversions

  1. Requirement Review: We confirm your power needs, workbench layout, and required container dimensions.
  2. Unit Selection: We identify a suitable one-trip or used unit from our nearest UK depot.
  3. Modification: Our engineers install the electrical fit-out, insulation, and personnel access doors.
  4. Logistics Planning: Our team verifies your site access and confirms a delivery date, typically within 10 to 14 working days for modified units.
  5. Installation: The hiab driver positions the unit and confirms it is level for immediate use.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a special power supply for a workshop container?

Can I move my workshop container once it is loaded with tools?

You must ensure the total weight does not exceed the payload limits. We recommend securing all tools before transit. More details are available on our faq page.
