Flat Rack Shipping Containers
Container Projects provides specialised equipment for heavy haulage and maritime logistics. We offer container sales and container hire for industrial projects across the United Kingdom. If you require technical specifications for oversized cargo, please get a quote through our office. Flat rack containers are designed for loads that exceed the dimensions of a standard box. These units lack side walls and roofs, making them essential for moving machinery, vehicles, and structural steel. Most of our stock consists of one-trip units. A one-trip unit is a new container that has made a single journey from the manufacturer to the UK. Every flat rack features a CSC plate. A CSC plate is a safety approval plate required for international shipping to confirm structural integrity.
Choose the right container size and type
Selecting the correct flat rack depends on the width and weight of your cargo. These units provide a heavy-duty floor capable of handling high point loads.
20ft Flat Rack Containers
The 20ft model is used for heavy machinery and concentrated loads. While the footprint matches a 20ft general-purpose unit, the lack of side walls allows for over-width cargo. Technical details for these units are available on our 20ft specialised dimensions page.

40ft Flat Rack Containers
For longer loads such as structural beams or industrial boilers, the 40ft flat rack is the industry standard. It shares the same base length as a 40ft general purpose container but provides a flush loading surface. These are available with fixed or collapsible ends to facilitate empty stacking.

Collapsible versus Fixed End Units
Collapsible flat racks feature end walls that fold flat when not in use. This allows multiple empty units to be stacked and transported as a single 20ft or 40ft ISO module. Fixed end units provide higher structural rigidity for certain lifting operations. If your cargo is tall but fits within standard width limits, you may also consider open top containers.
Hire or buy
Container Projects manages both purchase and rental agreements. Buying is a practical choice for companies with permanent heavy-haulage needs or those using platforms for static on-site storage. Hire provides flexibility for one-off shipments or project-based logistics where capital expenditure is limited. We supply equipment to various sectors across the UK with consistent lead times.
Condition grades and what they mean
We grade all flat racks to ensure they meet safety standards. Units for international shipping typically meet the IICL standard. IICL refers to a high standard of container repair and condition set by the Institute of International Container Lessors. For static storage or domestic road transport, we provide used units graded for structural integrity. While flat racks are open, we ensure all enclosed stock meets wind and watertight standards. A wind- and watertight unit is a condition grade that ensures the unit is sealed against weather and light. We provide the tare and payload for every unit. The tare is the weight of the empty container. The payload is the maximum weight of cargo the container can carry.

Delivery access, siting, and placement
Container Projects uses hiab crane vehicles to deliver and position flat racks. Site preparation is essential for a safe delivery:
- Surface Strength: Flat racks carry extreme weights. The ground must be reinforced or hard-standing concrete to prevent sinking.
- Vehicle Clearance: Delivery trucks require 10ft width and 15ft height clearance.
- Space: Ensure there is enough room for the truck to extend its outriggers and for the crane to swing the unit into place.
- Levelling: Even without side walls, the floor must be level to ensure the corner castings remain compatible for stacking or securing.
Security, condensation, and aftercare
Because flat racks are open units, security relies on the lashing points. Our units feature multiple heavy-duty lashing rings along the side rails to secure chains and straps. Condensation is not an issue for open platforms, but we recommend protective covers for moisture-sensitive machinery. Container Projects provides aftercare advice on maintaining lashing points and cleaning the floor to prevent corrosion.
Export use and compliance
Flat racks used for export must be structurally sound and carry a valid CSC plate. These units undergo testing for transverse and longitudinal stresses. Container Projects ensures all certification is current at the point of dispatch. We support our clients with the necessary documentation for port clearance and shipping line acceptance.
How Container Projects handles supply and delivery
- Specification: We assess your cargo dimensions and weight to determine the required container dimensions.
- Stock Allocation: We source a suitable unit from our closest UK depot to reduce transport distances.
- Logistics Planning: Our team reviews your site access and confirms the delivery schedule.
- Haulage: We dispatch a hiab or skeletal trailer to deliver the unit.
- Completion: The driver places the unit and confirms it is positioned correctly for your loading team.
